The City of New Bedford, in partnership with the Massachusetts Department of Transportation, recently hosted an informal Design Competition for the Whale’s Tooth Station. The City sought innovative ideas to create a multi-modal station that would reflect the city’s history, character of nearby neighborhoods as well as the city’s vision for the future. The submissions were evaluated by representatives of Mass DOT, the City of New Bedford and design professionals.New Bedford, MA, February 9, 2011 – Anthi Frangiadis AIA, AICP, was recognized by the City of New Bedford/Mass DOT for her design competition entry submission, “the Whale over Route 18.” The Honorable Mention Award for the Iconic Treatment of New Bedford’s Character was awarded to Ms. Frangiadis by Steve Smith, Executive Director of SRPEDD, and Kristina Egan, Director of Southcoast Rail, at a press conference today at the New Bedford Whaling Museum. Open to all, the design competition, challenged entrants to accommodate 30,000 square feet of office and retail space, pedestrian/bus bridge, 800' train platform, bus loading area and parking for the proposed Whale’s Tooth Station. The station is one of two stations proposed in New Bedford as part of Southcoast Rail. A “signature” or iconic design was sought for the bridge at this highly visible gateway location.
Hailed by the judges as “fun, creative, and….a signature gateway”, Ms. Frangiadis’ design drew from the composition of a whale’s skeleton in a nod to New Bedford’s long history of whaling. “The whale’s tail anchors the structure on Purchase Street as the community policing station while the whale’s spine arches over Route 18 as the pedestrian/bus bridge, said Frangiadis. “The whale’s rib cage is a three story building connected to the whale’s open jaw, the train platform.” Frangiadis’ design competition entry is online at www.archit8.com/issuu.php or can be viewed at the New Bedford Whaling Museum along with other submissions through the end of the month.
